Gabrielle Goliath’s ‘Elegy’ at National Arts Festival, Verbo in Mexico and Video Brasil

A durational performance conceived by Gabrielle Goliath titled Elegy brings together a group of female vocal performers to enact a mourning ritual. Intended as a response to the epidemic of violence perpetrated against women in South Africa, Elegy viscerally evokes the ongoing pain of countless individuals “whose subjectivities have been fundamentally violated – and who, as such, are all too easily consigned to a generic, all-encompassing victimhood.” Over the next month, Elegy will be performed at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown (28 June – 8 July) before travelling to the Verbo festival in Mexico (3 – 7 July) and Video Brasil (7 – 27 July).
