Mikhael SubotzkyEpilogue: Disordered, and Flatulent , 2021 - 2022

Epilogue: Disordered and Flatulent (2022) is the third in Subotzky's trilogy of films, following Moses and Griffiths (2007) and WYE (2012). Structured as a libretto in four chapters with a score by Jonathan M. Blair, the thirty-minute work moves between Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp, the Dutch East India Company's colonisation of the Cape, and the apartheid-era currency portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, a man who was, in fact, someone else entirely.
Two personal narratives run through the film: Subotzky's relationship with his late father George, and the testimony of Hermanus van Wyk, a Cape Town street dweller and long-term collaborator speaking in his own words. Built from family photographs, Old Master paintings, archival documents and Afrikaner propaganda films, layered through animated painting, drawing and collage, the work asks how violence passes between generations, from colonial history into personal inheritance.
