The video The Black Paintings: Dead White Man was originally intended as a live performance piece and was titled after Francisco Goya’s series of fourteen murals which were originally installed in his house Quinta del Sordo (Deaf Man’s Villa). It was produced for the performance festival “The World is not (A) Fair” at the Tanz Quartier, Vienna. The piece is a tribute to the many figures who have had the potential to institute lasting and significant changes in society before their assassinations. The mantra which Rose repeats throughout the work is the text entitled ‘ArtHole: Readings from within the Abyss’, which was produced and published for the magazine Art South Africa, in which the word “white” is written 800 times.
