‘Aslla’ is a shortened name for ‘Ansellia’, used in horticultural trade to refer to the so-called ‘Leopard Orchids’ (‘Ansellia Africana’). The Leopard Orchid, a species endemic to Africa, faces the risk of extinction due to overexploitation. Its yellow flowers are often covered with dark brown, irregularly patterned spots.
‘Orbis’, in its most basic sense, refers to a circular or spherical shape. In Latin, it means ‘of the eye’ and in Greek, ‘around the world’. In both instances it captures a sense of a global vision or encompassing sphere.
The word ‘Arista’ refers to a bristle-like form. It is commonly used with reference to a structure found on the antennae of certain insects (like flies) or the hair-like appendage on the seed or flower of some grasses and cereals. ‘Arista’ is of Greek origin and often means ‘the best’ or ‘excellence’.
‘Carabus’ refers to a species of large ground beetles in the family Caribidae. This is one of a series of similar sculptures.
