“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven,” Ecclesiastes says. When it comes to large-scale, big-budget artworks, that time is Monday afternoon in Basel, Switzerland, when Art Basel‘s Unlimited sector opens to invited guests. It offers a rare chance to see enormous and complicated artworks that may soon be shipped off to a collector’s private island (or storage space) or plunked down in a far-flung sculpture park. If you want to understand what capital can accomplish in the art world, it is an essential visit.

The number of rephotographed press images that cycle through a slide projector in Alfredo Jaar’s The Power of Words (1984/2021). The photos show people experiencing traumatic or fraught moments, and they appear above an image of a typewriter, where the paper would usually sit. A star of the current Venice Biennale, Jaar has installed his work in a small, dark room, and he was standing outside when I stopped by. “You see the Bhopal tragedy, you see the Lebanon tragedy, you see the invasion of Panama,” he said, identifying some of the slides. “You see so many disasters and tragedies of the time, and you look at them, and you think it’s today—it’s crazy.” The title is ironic, he said. “I didn’t know what to say about this, and I felt that words didn’t mean anything anymore, at the time.” It’s showstopper, jarringly incongruous with some of the many splashy spectacles on view in Unlimited. “Today the only hope of resistance is images that communicate to us the truth,” the artist said, “but if we do not act on them, nothing will happen.” (Five galleries are showing it: Jean-Kenta Gauthier, Goodman Gallery, Lelong, Lia Rumma, and Thomas Schutte.)
